FresherImage : Photoshop : High Tech Gear

PHOTOSHOP TIP: Gear

by Doni Ronquillo
http://www.freewebtemplates.com

This tip was used in the creation of FresherImage.com, and can be found on the top right hand side of the page.

This tip will work in any version of Adobe Photoshop.

Step 1 Open a new 200x200 pixel document, and make a circle with the eliptical marquee. (hint: hold down shift to make a perfect circle.)
Step 2 - First create a new layer then fill your selection with black. After you fill your circle go to Select:Modify:Contract. Contract your selection about 15 pixels. Then hit backspace to delete the center of the circle.
Step 3 - Use the rectangle marquee tool to create a rectangle down the center of your circle. Then hold down the "alt" key and clear out the middle of your rectangle and fill it with black.
Step 4 - Go to Layer:Duplicate Layer then rotate the layer about 45 degrees. repeat this step until you have your desired amount of teeth.
Step 5 - Using the circle marquee make a selection around the outside of your shape. Then hit Select:Inverse, then backspace. This just rounds the edges of your teeth a bit and makes the gear a bit more rounded.
Step 6 - Hit Select:Select All then choose the arrow tool and nudge your selection. Then create a new layer and fill it with a gradient or texture of your choice. At this point you can delete your black shape layer.
Step 7 - The rest is really up to you, you can add bevels, shadows, rust or whatever effect you think looks cool. Be creative and you will amaze yourself.
