Step 1 -
Open a new 200x200 pixel document, and make a circle with the eliptical
marquee. (hint: hold down shift to make a perfect circle.) |

Step 2 - First create
a new layer then fill your selection with black. After you fill your circle
go to Select:Modify:Contract. Contract your selection about 15 pixels.
Then hit backspace to delete the center of the circle. |

Step 3 - Use the
rectangle marquee tool to create a rectangle down the center of your circle.
Then hold down the "alt" key and clear out the middle of your rectangle
and fill it with black. |

Step 4 - Go to Layer:Duplicate
Layer then rotate the layer about 45 degrees. repeat this step until
you have your desired amount of teeth. |

Step 5 - Using the
circle marquee make a selection around the outside of your shape. Then
hit Select:Inverse, then backspace. This just rounds the edges of
your teeth a bit and makes the gear a bit more rounded. |

Step 6 - Hit Select:Select
All then choose the arrow tool and nudge your selection. Then create
a new layer and fill it with a gradient or texture of your choice. At this
point you can delete your black shape layer. |

Step 7 - The rest
is really up to you, you can add bevels, shadows, rust or whatever effect
you think looks cool. Be creative and you will amaze yourself. |
